first4diving A Lighthead in the making …

Posted on Tuesday 19 September 2006

In the last post I explained my decision to build from scratch a new and revised lighthead that was somewhat of a departure from my previous maglight derived lightheads.

This one will no doubt be somewhat over engineered given things like the wall thickness of 7.5mm (how much!! I hear you ask) yes, true, not necessary as we are not trying for the deep dive record or hoping to sell them to the sub-market ;-)

Its more a matter of accepting some limitations in terms of the available tools (Drills and Taps).

Currently the ‘slug’ is being reduced to design dimensions, which is a slow and careful process. And here I have to admit that I had not really appreciated just how much time it takes to take a bare rod of aluminium and start turning it into something recognisable.

Having done the design on my CAD system and not having the ‘practical’ experience in terms of lathe skills I have been most fortunate in gaining the help of a close friend who has the necessary skills/experience by the truck load.

Here is where we are currently:

As for the design of the lighthead itself…

I’ll update with more imagery as the work progresses…

I have been monitoring the design and production of this product over the recent weeks with great interest. The standard so far is excelent. Although I do not dive myself I can see it’s potential.
